New Education Abroad Opportunities in Africa

African continent shaped as a woman wearing a head scarf.

Three new OSU summer programs – two in Tanzania and one in Rwanda – will be added to nine existing OSU programs in Africa for the 2016/17 academic year. Dr. Hollie Nyseth Brehm from the Department of Sociology will lead Genocide and its Aftermath in Rwanda, examining the roots of the 1994 genocide, the nature of the violence itself, and subsequent efforts towards justice and reconciliation. Participants will also study international aid and development in post-genocide Rwanda. HIV in Context-Tanzania combines academic and experiential learning in Tanzania to introduce students to fundamental history and microbiology concepts as they relate to the local HIV epidemic. Historian Dodie McDow and microbiologist Jesse Kwiek will lead this course, during which students will study the language (Swahili), history, and culture of East Africa, all in the context of the public health response to HIV. Sustainable and Resilient Community – Tanzania focuses on applied, service-learning projects in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. Participants will contribute to the sustainability of a partnered community’s long-term food, water, energy, and health systems in conjunction with the Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering (CEGE) capstone program. Dr. Joe Campbell of SENR from Environment and Natural Resources is developing this new program.

Other OSU programs include Culture, Society, and History of Zimbabwe, Arts and Community Development-Ghana, Francophone Africa: Between Tradition and Modernity (Senegal), Ghana-Sustainable Change; and Uganda Global May, as well as more specialized programs such as Engineering Service Learning – Ghana, Exotic Animal Behavior and Welfare – South Africa, Nursing Experience in Ethiopia, and Tropical Animal Husbandry and Health-Cameroon. Many alternative programs in Africa are available as well through non-OSU providers. For the comprehensive list, go to Education Abroad’s Search Programs.
