New books on Africa, territoriality, security
Several forthcoming publications will disseminate themes and ideas explored at two CAS-sponsored conferences. Discussions from a 2009 conference will be reflected in two volumes entitled United States-Africa Security Relations: Terrorism, Regional Security and National Interests to be published by Routledge later this summer. The original conference, which took place October 30-31 at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, examined the evolving U.S.-Africa security partnership. Since September 11, heightened security attention has focused on West Africa. The vast geographical expanse of the Sahel, with its relatively small governmental infrastructure, has made the region an appealing base for terrorist groups as evidenced by developments in the Niger Delta, and most recently in Mali. A second book to be printed by Adonis & Abbey Publishers, entitled Territoriality, Citizenship, and Peacebuilding examines the importance of territorial disparities as a factor in armed conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa was the theme of this Mershon-funded conference, organized jointly by CAS and the School of Politics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
