Model African Union brings home awards

Model AU winners
A delegation of 16 Model African Union students traveled to Washington D.C. this past February to participate in the National Model African Union conference. Convening every year at Howard University, the Model African Union Conference brings over 300 students from across the U.S. for 4 days of debate, resolution consolidation and discussion of high priority issues affecting the African continent. The simulation models the proceedings of the African Union based in Addis Ababa. This year OSU represented Ethiopia and Eritrea. The students began preparing for the conference several months in advance, studying the rules and procedures of the conference, researching issues pertaining to Africa and attending bi-weekly meetings in which they discussed current events. MAU Club advisor Laura Joseph counseled students on resolutions ranging from sustainable infrastructure development to maternal mortality. The students also received coaching from Dr. Brooke Hailu Beshah, a former senior diplomat, who also teaches the Model African Union course. Upon arriving in D.C., students visited the Ethiopian and Eritrean Embassies and received briefings about issues of national importance, and got the opportunity to ask questions to the diplomats. The group also had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Richard Cordray, the current Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, on Capitol Hill. The Ohio State University won 4 awards at the conference, 3 awards in the delegation representing Ethiopia and 1 from the delegation representing Eritrea. Outstanding delegate awards were given to Mathew Ellis (Political Science), Somtu Njoku (FCOB) and Mohamed Camara (FCOB) and a committee leadership award was given to Mohamed Camara.
