Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders
Beginning in mid-June, The Ohio State University will host 25 young professionals from across Africa in a six-week Public Management Institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and embodies President Obama’s commitment to invest in the future of Africa. Through this initiative, young African leaders are gaining the skills and connections they need to accelerate their career and contribute more robustly to strengthening democratic institutions, spurring economic growth, and enhancing peace and security in Africa. Fellows are young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa who have established records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive change in their respective organizations and communities.
The John Glenn College of Public Affairs and the Center for African Studies are organizing the MWF Institute focused on public management and five subthemes: health, business and entrepreneurship, agriculture, education, and democracy and governance. Ohio State’s program weaves a sequence of leadership development modules into the institute’s lectures, discussions, interactions with public, private and non-profit organizations, and social and professional networking opportunities, both on and off campus.
To promote an authentic and meaningful experience, the MWF Institute seeks volunteers to support Fellows during their stay in Columbus. Volunteers will act as liaisons for Fellows to Columbus and Central Ohio, sharing their knowledge of local sites, food and events. MWF volunteers may contribute by attending social events, providing transportation or by simply answering questions Fellows may have about Columbus or American culture. Volunteers are also invited to provide home-stay experiences for Fellows, inviting individuals or groups into their home for a weekend during the program. MWF volunteers will have an opportunity to explore similarities and differences in interests, experiences and culture, and to build long-term relationships with emerging leaders from other countries.
