Dr. Robert Agunga (1951 - 2025)

A statement from CAS Director Dr. Ousman Kobo on the passing of former Director Dr. Robert Agunga:
In Memorial
Professor Robert Agunga
It is with a heavy heart, that I write to share that Robert Agunga, former director of the Center for African Studies (CAS), and an associate professor in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, has passed away. Dr. Agunga led CAS from 2012 to 2017 and was actively involved in leading focused initiatives that broadened understanding of and engagement with the continent of Africa and diaspora communities across Ohio.
During his time with us, CAS hosted visits with universities from Ethiopia, Kenya, Swaziland, Tanzania, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and many more. CAS also helped facilitate the Uganda Global May study abroad program, managed successful conferences including the Agricultural Extension and Food Security in Africa symposium, and was part of two successful grants with the John Glenn College of Public Affairs to host 25 of Africa’s brightest emerging public management leaders for a six-week academic and leadership institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of State – the Mandela Washington Fellowship.
Probably one of the most memorable moments was CAS’ and Dr. Agunga’s involvement in helping to welcome the President of Somalia to Ohio State in 2013, a huge undertaking and fruitful visit.
He will certainly be missed by the Ohio State community, colleagues, friends and his wonderful family. Below is a link for the funeral arrangements.
