On Saturday, October 11, CAS was the honored guest at Ohio University’s Africa Night organized by members of OU’s student body.  As the guests of honor, CAS’ director (Dr. Ousman Kobo), and assistant director (Dr. Jacien Carr), were seated at the head table with Ohio University’s President, Dr. Lori Stewart Gonzalez, the university’s Executive Vice President-Provost, Dr. Donald Leo, OU’s Director of African studies, Professor Negash, and other university leadership.  Dr. Kobo was also selected by the university’s African Students’ Union to deliver the evening’s keynote speech.  Dr. Kobo’s speech was entitled, “One Voice”, in which he encouraged students to seek deeper meaning in African studies, particularly in the spirit of a political and communal renewal on the continent.  A key aspect of his speech was to challenge the negative stigma regarding mental health which is significantly present in African society. Dr. Kobo received a standing ovation from the over 200 attendees.

Africa Night at Ohio University is an annual signature event celebrating the cultural exchange between the university community and Africa.  Guests are treated to various activities such as dance, live African music, and an exquisite gastronomic experience of traditional African cuisine.  As noted, this year’s celebration was well attended with over 200 guests.  Those in attendance also included many staff and faculty members across disciplines.
