Agricultural Extension Conference
Over 75 participants from across the US, Africa, and beyond gathered at OSU in late October to discuss the role of agricultural extension in achieving food security throughout the continent. The importance of agricultural extension in Africa’s agricultural transformation agenda cannot be overemphasized. Smallholder farmers make up over 70 percent of the continent’s one billion people. For the vast majority of these farmers agricultural extension is their gateway to information on modern farming methods. The conference hosted 20 panel presentations, engaging participants on topics including climate change, gender, innovative extension approaches, information technology, and communication. Keynote speakers included Dr. Eklou Attiogbevi-Somado, Principal Economist at the African Development Bank; Dr. Keith Smith, Associate Vice President Agricultural Administration and Director, Ohio State University Extension; and Dr. Margaret Mangheni, Associate Professor, Department of Extension and Innovation Studies, of Makerere University. The two days of presentations were followed by concerted discussion to forge a ‘roadmap’ to move the field of agricultural extension in Africa forward. CAS’s Cosponsors included the Office of International Programs in Agriculture (IPA), Ohio State University Extension (OSUE), the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), International Studies (UISP), and the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education and Leadership (ACEL) and the Mershon Center for International Security.
