Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

OSU, like many US colleges and universities, has seen a dramatic upsurge in travel to Africa.  Whether billed as academic study tours, or as Service Learning, many students are motivated by the desire to ‘give back’ or to ‘do something’ during the course of their largely short-term travel. How do programs address this desire and who ultimately benefits most - students themselves or host communities?  How do they fall short of expectations?  How do host communities, particularly those who have established ties with OSU programs, perceive impacts of these programs? How are they evaluated and who holds them accountable?

Discussants:  Joe Campbell, ENR and leader of Ghana Sustainable Change program;  Marvin “Nana” Owusu, Brong Ahafo Association; Dr. Katey Borland, Comparative Studies.
