Dr. David Kraybill

 Dr. David Kraybill was appointed Director of the Center for African Studies in January 2007. He is Professor of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. He teaches a course on Economic Development of Sub-Saharan Africa (AED Econ/IS 436) on Africa and directs an annual OSU study abroad in East Africa. His research is on economic development in Africa and the United States. Dr. Kraybill 's recent research includes studies of human adaptation to climate change, household poverty, household savings, governmental decentralization, and primary and secondary school enrollment. In 2003-04, he spent a sabbatical year as a Fulbright Scholar at Makerere University in Uganda. Fluent in French and Swahili, he has lived in Africa a total of five years (Tanzania, Uganda, and Democratic Republic of Congo). Kraybill has served as Associate Editor or member of editorial boards of seven academic journals. He has received research and advising awards at Ohio State, and recently was recipient of the International Award of Merit from the Gamma Sigma Delta honor society. He has been consultant or advisor to the World Bank, Rockefeller Foundation, Southeast Consortium for International Development, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and numerous organizations. Professor Kraybill holds a B.A. in English from Eastern Mennonite College, an M.S. in Economics from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Virginia Tech. He came to Ohio State in 1992.

Laura Joseph has been with the Center since 2003.  Her professional experience includes eight years with a local refugee resettlement agency, the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association, and eight years with Catholic Relief Services working on development and relief projects in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and other countries.  She spent two years as an ESL teacher with the Peace Corps in the People’s Republic of Benin in West Africa, and a year teaching ESL at Ashland College.  As an undergraduate, she studied Humanities in International Affairs through the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.  As a graduate student, she attended Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies in Washington, earning an MA in Economics and Social Change and Development.
